MANN REPORT: November 2008

Staging for a November bounty

NovemberHow silently they tumble down
And come to rest upon the ground
To lay a carpet, rich and rare,
Beneath the trees without a care,
Content to sleep, their work well done,
Colors gleaming in the sun.   At other times, they wildly fly
Until they nearly reach the sky.
Twisting, turning through the air
Till all the trees stand stark and bare.
Exhausted, drop to earth below
To wait, like children, for the snow."

-   Elsie N. Brady, Leaves

November is upon us and throughout the city it's a season for joy, abundance and gratitude after months of hard times and chilling changes. There's many ways we can, through staging our homes and real estate, give thanks, to rejoice in all that we have. As the recent market drama has shown us, there are no guarantees in life. And it's better to give thanks for all that we have instead of concentrating on what we don't have.

In the business of staging, we recognize that the declining real estate market has played a role in keeping apartments on the market for longer than any of us like. With staging, there are things that potential buyers are always grateful to see, things that result in a faster sale.

Here's some staging tips to get your property moving!

  1. Flea markets:  Check out the city's great markets to find amazing furniture and quirky decorative accessories to liven up your property. There's an amazing market in Ft. Greene. Keep your eyes open for festive table decorations.
  2. Beautiful sparkly things: Make your ordinary fireplace a magical retreat. Cozy up in a velvet chair with a soft throw for the perfect place to relax.
  3. Color: Splash color through your home. Find a deep color hue that you love, paint a bookshelf or a wall. Pick up a yellow vase. Bringing bright colors into the home really attracts the eye, and buyers!
  4. Flowers: The Chelsea flower shops are a great place to find unusual, exotic flowers---like the coxcomb---to brighten your home this fall.
  5. Light, light, light: Remember during Autumn and Winter that light is key to brightening the home. A bright home is essential when showing a property. Make sure that lights are on, that bulbs are clean and clear of dust, and that fixtures, lamps and chandeliers are sparkling clean. Get out the glass cleaner and scrub your windows.

Whether or not your home is on the market, there are ways to give thanks with your property. One way is to invite friends or family over for an abundant feast. You might not be hosting Thanksgiving, but there's nothing like a brisk November night and the abundance of Autumn vegetables to make a hearty meal. So hit Whole Foods, pour some wine, light some candles, and enjoy the company of loved ones.

At Jill Vegas, we'd like to give thanks to you, to all the clients and to the real estate community for all your support and business. We've done nearly $200 million in business, and I'd like to take a minute to thank the real estate community, namely: Sotheby's, Prudential Douglas Elliman, Corcoran, Brown Harris Stevens and Halstead.  Thank you! And a hearty November to us all.
