AUTHOR AND STAGER JILL VEGAS TALKS SPEED DECORATING

Speed Decorating: A Pro Stagers Tips and Trade Secrets for a Fabulous Home in a Week or Less Speed Decorating hit the shelves just recently and Home and Living received a review copy and conducted this interview with author Jill Vegas.

Q.: Who is Jill Vegas?

A.: Speed Decorator and Home Stager extraordinaire!

Q.: How is “speed decorating” different from traditional decorating?

A.: Speed Decorating is about loving the home that you have, right now. It’s about taking immediate action to create a cozy home. You don’t have to wait 12 weeks until the custom sofa arrives, you can do something today to make it great. Traditional decorating is old fashioned and fussy. Who has time to wait years until a room is complete? Forget it! Lead times are horrible. Speed Decorating is about working with what’s available now to create a soulful and vibrant home.

Q.: In the book you have principles in order to begin the process, what are they?

1. Calm. What you want when you step inside your home is to have a sense of calm. If your home feels more chaotic than peaceful then it’s time for a refreshing change.

2. Condition. Everything in the home should be working and functional. That includes everything from making sure all light bulbs are shining bright to making sure the baseboards are dust free and everything in-between.

3. Style. Find your own sense of style! This doesn’t mean go to a showroom and buy everything from one place. this means making an effort to create an authentic look for your home. you can mix it up with one of a kind items found on eBay or a flea market or even the street! My friend found a Francis Knoll sofa on the street with missing cushions and stained fabric. She had it reupholstered with a chic blue mohair and now with the new cushions, it’s amazing!

4. Arrangement. Walking thru a room should be easy. What I mean is that you shouldn’t be tripping over furniture. I like to arrange my rooms frequently, depending on if I’m having a party or simply want to lounge on the sofa and watch a movie. One tip to do this easily is to put those little felt things on the bottom of all the furniture so I can easily glide a chair or side table across the room.
