Q.: You talked about a homeowner who didn’t “see” her room anymore—can you elaborate on that for us?

A.: When you live in the same space you sometimes quit “seeing” the things that annoy you such as the stack of unread New Yorkers piling up in the corner or the pile of dog toys that you know you should move but haven’t quite gotten around to or the ugly leather chair inherited from a family member. You just kinda settle for these things and live with them day in and day out. For some, it’s years! But the point is why live with something you don’t love? Life is too short! Start seeing your home again and really loving it. There are tips in the book for how to do that in different rooms.

Q.: How much furniture is too much?

A.: If you’re tripping over furniture to cross the room, it’s too much. Or maybe it’s the arrangement.Try removing the items that seem too much and if yo can live without it, then by all means, do so. Remember what Mies Vander Rohe said, “Less is more."

Q.: What do you say about TV’s in a living room?

A.: The living room is about connecting with friends and family. Therefore, the TV should not be the focal point. Get rid of the big clunky TV and invest in a chic slim panel. Wall mount it and hide the cords or if you’re placing it on a console make sure to keep the cords nice and tidy.

Q.: Do you have a trick to handle furniture dents in carpet?

A.: I use ice cubes and this little metal stick thingie that someone gave me to get the dent out.

Q.: What is wrong with most bathrooms?

A.: They’re dirty, tired and uninspired. They should be impeccably clean with clean grout and caulking. Invest in plush bath towels. Take the time to give the bathroom some style with new accessories, paint, light fixture, and art.
